new safety technologies to reduce casualties

The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) has released a new report where it is highlighted that new safety technologies could play a major role in reducing the numbers killed on European motorways (1900 fatalities on European highways in 2013).

The report calls on the EU to require the mandatory installation of intelligent seat belt reminder systems (SBR) for all passenger seats in new cars and also the installation of intelligent speed assistance (ISA) and lane departure warning systems (LDWS) in new vehicles -already mandatory for new lorries and buses.

The report also highlights the need for the European Union to do more to reduce the numbers of people killed on urban and rural roads as figures show motorway deaths are falling faster than deaths on the rest of the road network

The EU is currently undertaking a review of the safety requirements that all new vehicles sold in Europe must comply with. A new proposal is expected later this year; the rules were last updated in 2009 (see my previous post on this topic: UEs-transport-policy-consultation)
